In this video, we discuss the rules for renewing non-grandfathered plans that do not comply with all of the patient protections created by the Affordable Care Act.
The transition relief allows individuals and small employers, if the state and the insurance companies agree, to renew their old, non-ACA-compliant plans through October 1, 2016. Groups that purchased coverage in the large group market will have this opportunity between January 1 and October 1, 2016.
There have been three primary pieces of guidance on this topic: a letter from CMS to the state insurance commissioners in November, 2013; a CMS bulletin in March, 2014; and an FAQ issued by CMS in May, 2014.
